Eyebrow Shapes Tips

There are five basic eyebrow shapes that can be used to accentuate or modify facial features. Choosing the right brow for your facial shape is very important – choosing the wrong shape can be quite unflattering. For example, a highly arched, angled brow can make a round face appear more oval but the same brow will make a long face look even longer.
The five basic brow shapes are:
  • Round: With a gentle, rounded arch, this shape softens angular faces with sharp features such as pointed chins.
  • Sharp Angled: With a high, sharp peak, this brow opens up the eye giving a youthful appearance. It is a strong brow that can help balance strong features such as a square jaw and give a slimming appearance to a round face.
  • Soft Angled: Still fairly high, more rounded peak give a softer, more delicate look.
  • Curved: This brow has a slight curve between the inner corner and the arched peak giving a strong appearance which works well to balance a square face.
  • Flat: This minimally arched, horizontal brow works well with long faces making them appear more oval.
So, now that you are familiar with the different eyebrow shapes, how do you know which will best suit your features? The first thing to do is identify your face shape.

Different Face Shapes

OK, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Remove all makeup and pull your hair back and take a long, objective look in the mirror. Your face will probably not look exactly like any of the basic shapes, however, you should be able to identify which shape yours is most similar to and then follow the recommendations for that shape.
There are six basic face shapes and knowing which one your face most closely resembles is the key to determining which eyebrow shape will be most flattering for you.
The six basic face shapes are:
  • Round
  • Long
  • Square
  • Heart-Shaped
  • Oval
  • Diamond-Shaped
If you are having trouble identifying your face shape, here are some tips that might help you:
  • If your face is widest at the cheeks and appears almost as wide as it is long, your face is probably round.
  • If your forehead, cheeks and jawline are all about the same width, your face is probably long. If your jaw is also square, your face is probably square.
  • If your forehead and cheeks are about the same width and your chin is narrow and tapered to a point, your face is probably heart-shaped.
  • If your chin is slightly narrower than your forehead and tapers to a narrow oval with prominent cheeks, your face is probably oval.
  • If your face is widest at the cheekbone and your forehead is short and narrow, with angular features and pointed chin, your face is probably diamond-shaped. (This is an uncommon shape.)

The Best Brows for Your Face

Now that you have determined what your predominant face shape is, it’s time to figure out which brow shape will best enhance your features.
The following guidelines will give you an idea of what brow shape is best and worst for each face shape. It’s certainly alright to have fun and experiment with different eyebrow shapes, but to find the most appealing look you’ll be comfortable wearing every day you’ll want to follow these rules.
